Santander launches ‘Edge Explorer’ packaged account: Is it worth the £17 monthly fee?

Santander has announced the launch of its ‘Edge Explorer’ packaged bank account, a feature-rich account designed to challenge popular alternatives, including the Nationwide FlexPlus account and Monzo Max. It is the bank's first comprehensive packaged account, bundling a suite of insurance policies, cashback offers and lifestyle perks for a fixed fee of £17 per month.

Packaged bank accounts, which offer additional features such as travel and mobile phone insurance in exchange for a monthly fee, are a well-established part of the UK banking landscape. Anthony Warrington, Santander UK's Head of Current Accounts, said that the 'Edge Explorer' account has been designed to provide "customers and their families with cover for some of life's 'what ifs', whether that's a lost phone or a holiday that doesn't quite go to plan". Santander has recently faced criticism for reducing the cashback that can be earned on its existing 'Edge' and 'Edge Up' accounts. While unpopular, the launch of a packaged bank account with higher cashback potential does help to provide some clarity over its decision.

With a significant monthly cost, the question remains whether the benefits of the Santander Edge Explorer justify its £17 monthly fee. In this article, we explain how the Santander Edge Explorer account works, what it offers and how it compares against its key rivals.

What is the Santander Edge Explorer account?

The Santander Edge Explorer bank account is a packaged bank account that bundles together a range of financial and lifestyle benefits. Its main features include a comprehensive insurance package covering worldwide family travel, family mobile phones, and UK & European breakdown cover. The account also offers up to £20 a month in cashback on household bills and debit card spending, fee-free card use abroad, 24/7 remote GP access, and exclusive access to a linked high-interest savings account. The account comes with a £17 monthly fee.

Below is a summary of the key features offered with the Santander Edge Explorer account:

  • Monthly Fee: The account costs £17 per month.
  • Cashback: You can earn up to £20 cashback each month. This is split into two parts: 1% cashback on selected household bills (up to £10 per month) and 1% cashback on supermarket and travel spending (also up to £10 per month).
  • Worldwide Family Travel Insurance: Provides worldwide, multi-trip travel insurance for you and your family, which also covers winter sports.
  • UK & European Breakdown Cover: You get personal breakdown cover, meaning you are covered as a driver or passenger in any eligible vehicle in the UK and Europe.
  • Worldwide Family Mobile Phone Insurance: Covers mobile phones belonging to you and your family (living at the same address) against loss, theft, and accidental damage.
  • 24/7 Remote GP Access: Account holders and their families get round-the-clock access to a UK-based GP via phone or video call for consultations, private prescriptions, and referrals.
  • Linked Santander Edge Saver: Exclusive access to the Edge Saver account, which pays 6.00% AER interest on balances up to £4,000. This rate includes a bonus of 2.50% AER that lasts for the first 12 months.
  • Fee-Free Overseas Spending: Santander does not charge any fees when you use your debit card for purchases or cash withdrawals abroad in the local currency.
  • Santander Boosts: You can sign up for Santander's rewards platform to get personalised cashback offers, vouchers, and prize draws with a range of retailers.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply for the Santander Edge Explorer account, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be aged between 18 and 73 years old.
  • Live in the UK permanently.
  • For joint accounts, both individuals must meet the age requirements and live at the same UK address.

Santander Edge Explorer Cashback explained

A standout feature of the Edge Explorer account is its generous cashback offering, allowing customers to earn back a significant portion, or even all, of the monthly fee through their regular spending. It is split into two distinct categories, each with its own £10 monthly cap, meaning customers can earn a maximum of £20 per month, or £240 per year in cashback.

The two cashback categories are:

  • 1% Cashback on Household Bills: Customers can earn 1% cashback on a range of essential household bills paid by Direct Debit from the account. This is capped at a maximum of £10 per month. To reach this cap, a customer would need to spend £1,000 on eligible monthly bills. The eligible Direct Debits include Council Tax, mobile and home phone bills, broadband and paid-for TV packages, gas and electricity bills, and water bills.
  • 1% Cashback on Debit Card Spending: Customers also earn 1% cashback on specific, everyday spending with their Edge Explorer debit card. It is also capped at a maximum of £10 per month, meaning you would need to spend £1,000 on eligible purchases to hit the limit. The qualifying spending categories are supermarket purchases and travel costs, which include fuel, electric vehicle (EV) charging, and train and bus tickets. It does not include air travel.

Santander Edge Explorer Cashback example

To illustrate how the cashback works in practice, the table below provides an example of a family's potential monthly cashback earnings.

Monthly Direct Debits

Category Example Monthly Spend Cashback Earned (1%)
Council Tax £180 £1.80
Gas & Electricity £120 £1.20
Water £70 £0.70
Broadband & TV £60 £0.60
Mobile Phones £70 £0.70
Total £500 £5.00

Monthly Debit Card Spending

Category Example Monthly Spend Cashback Earned (1%)
Supermarket Shopping £650 £1.80
Fuel / Transport £150 £1.20
Total £800 £8.00

Total Cashback

Category Example Monthly Spend Cashback Earned (1%)
Monthly Direct Debits £500 £5.00
Monthly Debit Card Spending £800 £8.00
Total £1,300 £13.00

As the example above shows, a family with typical spending patterns can significantly reduce the effective monthly cost of the account. Those with higher spending in the eligible categories could potentially earn the full £20 cashback, making the account profitable before even considering the value of the insurance benefits.

Santander Edge Explorer Benefits Explained

Aside from cashback, the Santander Edge Explorer account offers a range of other benefits and we have summarised these below:

Worldwide Family Travel Insurance

  • Provider: Travel insurance is provided by Chubb, a global insurance specialist.
  • Coverage: It offers worldwide, multi-trip travel insurance for the account holder, their partner, and dependent children. The policy includes cover for winter sports as standard.
  • Limitations: The policy provides cover for cancellation or cutting a trip short up to £5,000, unlimited emergency medical expenses, and personal belongings up to £2,000.
  • Important Exclusions and Conditions: The cover ceases for any individual on their 75th birthday. Pre-existing medical conditions are not automatically covered; they must be declared to Chubb, and this may result in an additional premium being charged to ensure cover is in place. Family members are typically only covered when they are travelling with at least one of the account holders.

Worldwide Family Mobile Phone Insurance

  • Provider: Mobile phone insurance is administered by Likewize, a tech protection and support company, and underwritten by Aviva.
  • Coverage: The policy covers mobile phones owned by the account holder(s) and their family members who live at the same address. It protects against loss, theft, accidental damage, and mechanical breakdown.
  • Limitations: The insurance covers phones with a maximum value of £2,000 (including VAT) at the time of purchase. For a joint account, up to four claims can be made in a 12-month period.
  • Excess Fees: Excess is £75 for a repair and £135 for a replacement.

UK & European Breakdown Cover

  • Provider: Breakdown cover is provided by Allianz Assistance.
  • Coverage: The cover is based on the individual and is not vehicle-specific. This means the account holder(s) are covered as a driver or a passenger in any eligible vehicle they are travelling in.
  • Limitations: Assistance in the event of a breakdown across both the UK and Europe.

24/7 Remote GP Access

  • Provider: Arranged by Chubb and delivered by Teladoc Health UK.
  • Service: Account holders and their families gain 24/7 remote access to a UK-based GP via phone or video consultation. This service can be used for advice on mild to moderate ailments and includes the ability to issue private prescriptions, make private specialist referrals, and provide short-term sick notes.
  • Limitations: The service is only available for use while the customer is in the UK.

Linked Santander Edge Saver Account

  • Headline Rate: Edge Explorer customers gain exclusive access to the Santander Edge Saver account which offers a variable interest rate of 6.00% AER.
  • Conditions: Rate includes a 2.50% AER bonus which is only valid for the first 12 months after the account is opened, after which the rate will drop. The boosted rate is only paid on balances up to a maximum of £4,000.

Fee-Free Overseas Spending

  • Benefit: Santander does not charge any fees for using the Edge Explorer debit card to make purchases or withdraw cash outside the UK in the local currency.
  • Limitations: While Santander does not charge a fee, it is important to be aware that some local ATM operators abroad may still impose their own usage charges.

Santander Edge Explorer Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Potentially Self-Funding: The cashback offer has the potential to completely offset the monthly fee. For households with significant spending on bills, groceries, and transport, the ability to earn up to £240 per year can make this one of the best value-for-money packaged accounts available.
  • Comprehensive Family Cover: The insurance package is robust, covering the three key areas of travel, mobile phones, and vehicle breakdown for the entire family under a single, easy-to-manage fee.
  • Modern and Relevant Perks: The inclusion of 24/7 remote GP access is a highly relevant and valuable benefit for families today. Combined with the headline-grabbing linked saver account, the total benefits package feels contemporary and well-rounded.

Cons

  • Substantial Fee: At £17 per month (£204 per year), the fee is significant. For those who cannot or do not make full use of the benefits, particularly the cashback offer, the account can represent poor value.
  • Age Limit: The account is only for those aged between 18 and 73 years old. The account is therefore unsuitable for older customers, who may be better served by competitors like Nationwide.
  • Limited Savings Benefit: The 6.00% interest rate on the Edge Saver includes a 2.50% AER bonus, which is only applicable for the first 12 months. It is also capped at a relatively low balance of £4,000.

How does Santander Edge Explorer compare?

Competitors to the Santander Edge Explorer account include the long-established Nationwide FlexPlus account, the competitively priced Virgin Money Club M account, and a relatively recent offering from digital challenger bank Monzo, the Monzo Max account. Each account has a distinct focus and will appeal to different types of customers and we have provided a simple comparison in the table below.

Santander Edge Explorer Virgin Money Club M Nationwide FlexPlus Monzo Max
Monthly Fee £17 £12.50 £18 £17
Annual Cost £204 £150 £216 £204
Travel Insurance Worldwide Family (by Chubb) Worldwide Family (by AIG) Worldwide Family (by Aviva) Worldwide (by Zurich) - Family add-on extra
Mobile Insurance Worldwide Family (by Likewize/Aviva) Worldwide Family (incl. Gadgets) Worldwide Family (by Assurant) Individual (Family add-on extra)
Breakdown Cover UK & Europe (by Allianz) UK & Europe (by Green Flag) UK & Europe (by AA) UK & Europe (by RAC)
Key Differentiator Up to £20/month cashback; 24/7 GP Access; 6% linked saver. Cheaper fee; includes gadget cover (laptops, etc.). No upper age limit on travel insurance (good for older travellers). Digital-first banking; lifestyle perks (Greggs, Railcard).

Is the Santander Edge Explorer account worth it?

For any packaged bank account, the fundamental question is whether the total package on offer represents better value than purchasing the components separately. For a family that regularly purchases worldwide family travel insurance, family mobile phone insurance, and personal breakdown cover, bundling them through the Edge Explorer account is likely to be cheaper. However, the value diminishes quickly if not all benefits are required. For example, someone who does not travel abroad, does not own a car, or already has mobile phone cover through their home insurance would be paying for benefits they do not use.

So, the question around whether the account offers good value is likely to centre around how many benefits you are likely to use, but also how much cashback you can earn. In a best-case scenario, a household with high eligible spending can earn the maximum £20 per month, wiping out the £17 monthly fee, making the entire suite of insurance and lifestyle benefits effectively free. The linked Edge Saver account adds another layer to the calculation. A customer depositing the maximum £4,000 could earn approximately £240 in interest in the first year. While this is an attractive return, it is not the only high-interest savings account on the market and is almost entirely cancelled out by the £204 account fee. Additionally, the 2.50% AER bonus is only applicable for the first year; therefore, the savings account should be viewed as a perk that helps offset the fee, rather than a primary reason to open the account.
