Andrew Ward, Chief Executive of ScottishPower’s Customer Business said: "We know our customers are savvy when it comes to managing their energy use. We’re driving initiatives to help reduce bills, especially at this time of year when people are using more energy and the new price cap comes into force.
"By working together with our customers, we can ease pressure on the electricity network, meaning that the need for energy from fossil fuel sources can be lessened. This in turn benefits our customers' pockets and the environment too".
How does half-price electricity at weekends work?
By offering half-price electricity every Saturday and Sunday between 11am and 4pm, customers are incentivised to adjust when they use electricity in their home, moving tasks that require higher consumption to the weekend. There is lower demand on the national grid during the daytime at weekends so renewable power is more readily available.
Those taking part will be charged for their electricity as normal and any electricity they use during a half-price event will be calculated with a discount applied in the form of a credit. Customers do not need to take any manual readings as the smart meter will communicate with ScottishPower and let it know how much energy has been used. The results will show as ‘Power Saver Credit’ on customers' energy bills.
It is important to remember that the 'Power Saver' discount will only apply to the electricity used during an event, and customers will not be rewarded for any gas they use.
How much could you save using ScottishPower's 'Power Saver' service?
Following a recent trial in which 5,000 customers participated, savings equated to an average of £35 per customer per year. However, some customers made savings that equated to approximately £300 per year by adjusting their weekly routine, making use of the discounted rate during the daytime at weekends.
