AXA was founded in 1958 in France and is now one of the world's largest insurers operating in numerous countries around the globe. In the UK, together with breakdown cover, AXA offers a range of insurance products for motor, travel, home and business.

What types of breakdown cover does AXA offer?

AXA offer 4 levels of breakdown cover suitable for most needs and the cover can be purchased as a standalone product or as an addition when buying your car insurance with AXA.

AXA Local

  • Assistance in the event of a breakdown more than a mile from your home
  • Will take you and up to 6 passengers to a destination within a 20-mile radius if your vehicle cannot be repaired at the roadside
  • Includes caravan or trailer if attached to the vehicle at the time of the breakdown
  • Includes cover for mis-fuelling or you running out of fuel

AXA Nationwide

  • Assistance in the event of a breakdown more than a mile from your home
  • Will take you and up to 6 passengers to a destination within a 20-mile radius if your vehicle cannot be repaired at the roadside
  • If your vehicle cannot be repaired the same day, you and up to six passengers will be taken to your home, or your original destination; alternatively, overnight accommodation or a hire vehicle will be provided.
  • Includes caravan or trailer if attached to the vehicle at the time of the breakdown
  • Includes cover for mis-fuelling or running out of fuel

AXA Nationwide and Homestart

  • Assistance in the event of a breakdown at your home address or within a mile of your home
  • Will take you and up to 6 passengers to a destination within a 20-mile radius if your vehicle cannot be repaired at the roadside
  • If your vehicle cannot be repaired the same day, you and up to six passengers will be taken to your home, or your original destination; alternatively, overnight accommodation or a hire vehicle will be provided.
  • Includes caravan or trailer if attached to the vehicle at the time of the breakdown
  • Includes cover for mis-fuelling or running out of fuel

AXA European

  • Assistance in the event of a breakdown at your home address or within a mile of your home
  • If your vehicle cannot be repaired at the roadside will take you and up to 6 passengers to a destination within a 20-mile radius
  • If your vehicle cannot be repaired the same day, you and up to six passengers will be taken to your home, or your original destination; alternatively, overnight accommodation or a hire vehicle will be provided
  • If you breakdown in any of over 50 European countries alternative options will be offered, if required, such as accommodation and/or alternative transportation, or the repatriation of the vehicle and its passengers
  • Includes caravan or trailer if attached to the vehicle at the time of the breakdown
  • Includes cover for mis-fuelling or running out of fuel

AXA breakdown cover reviews

The consumer website Which? rated AXA as the top third-party car breakdown provider in their recent survey. The survey results showed that 78% of cars were fixed at the side of the road and 91% of breakdowns were attended within an hour.

The reviews posted on independent review site Trustpilot rated AXA breakdown as 'poor' with a rating of 1.8 out of 5.0 with poor response times as the major criticism.

Summary

AXA breakdown cover offers a good level of cover and with four policy types available can provide cover to suit most people's needs and budgets. Customer reviews give a mixed picture, the consumer website Which? provided a glowing review whereas other review sites provide a less positive view of the service provided.
