Alternative asset income heatmaps

Below you will find four alternative asset income heatmaps covering:

  • UK bond funds (includes funds from the UK Corporate Bond, UK Strategic Bond and UK Sterling High Yield sectors)
  • Global bond funds
  • Mixed-asset funds (includes funds from the Mixed Investment 20-60% Shares and Mixed Investment 40-85% Shares sectors )
  • Property funds  (includes funds from the UK Direct Property sector and the Property Other sector)

One thing to note is that the heatmaps are only able to cover eight years of income payments as opposed to the 16-17 years for the standard equity income heatmaps as 10+ year data is not readily available. As normal, the tables include the current yield for each fund.

So it is possible to build a multi-asset income portfolio, or indeed buy a ready-made multi-asset income fund. However, the heatmaps highlight an important point that I often stress to income investors, and that's that alternative investments rarely provide a reliable growing income stream. For that, you are always better off using equity income funds.

Finally, please keep your Chatterbox questions and ideas coming as it could inspire a research piece (like this one) that you and other members will find useful.

Key:

A blue box indicates that the annual payout by the fund was higher that year than in the previous year. A red box indicates that the payout was cut compared to the previous year. A yellow box indicates that the annual payout was the same as the previous year. An empty (white) square means that the fund was not in existence at that point in time.
