Teachers can now access 'Blue Light Card' rewards - How to sign upThe Blue Light Card is a membership scheme that offers discounts and rewards for a number of key workers in the UK. It is popular among emergency services personnel, NHS workers, social workers and the armed forces and it has now been extended to Teachers.

A statement on the Blue Light Card website read: "We exist to show our appreciation for the Blue Light community, your service and sacrifice. Giving you the discounts you deserve, and access to exclusive experiences and rewards. Teachers just like other key workers support our communities. You dedicate so much time in shaping future generations, you leave a lasting legacy on a child's life; that impact deserves recognition".

In this article, we explain who is now eligible, how much it costs and the steps you need to take to sign up.

What is a Blue Light Card?

The Blue Light Card is the UK's largest discount membership service providing key workers with exclusive access to thousands of discounts and rewards. Members receive a physical discount card when they sign up which can be used when shopping in person, as well as a digital card via the app which can be used to make online purchases. The app allows members to search for the latest deals and these can be filtered by deal type and even location.

Who is eligible for a Blue Light Card?

The Blue Light Card website states that "if you're a member of the emergency services, NHS, social care sector, or armed forces, you'll likely be eligible". With teachers now being added to that list, we've provided a full list below of the eligible job titles for those wishing to become a Blue Light Card member.

  • Highways England traffic officers
  • HM armed forces including veterans, coastguard, prison and probation service

  • MoD - civil servants, fire service, and police
  • NHS including NHS dental practice and optometrists
  • Pharmacists
  • Police
  • Red Cross
  • Reserve Armed Forces
  • RNLI
  • Royal Air Force, Royal Marines, and Royal Navy

Are all teachers eligible for a Blue Light Card?

Not all teachers are eligible for a Blue Light Card. Higher education staff are not currently eligible, however, teaching and supporting staff working in any of the following are eligible:

  • State Early Years and Primary Schools
  • State Secondary Schools and 6th Form Colleges
  • Special Schools, Vocational Schools, Referral Units and Centrally Employed

How to sign up for a Blue Light Card

Below, we explain the steps required to take out a Blue Light Card if you are a Head Teacher, Teacher or Teaching Assistant.

Step 1

You'll need to head to the Blue Light Card registration page and select 'Teachers' from the drop-down list.

Step 2

Provide your full name and details of your employment. This can be as simple as your work email address (which has to include a surname for verification purposes) or you can provide a work ID or payslip information.

Step 3

You'll then need to pay a fee of £4.99 which gives users access to the Blue Light Card discounts and rewards for two years. You can then create a login and access the rewards via the website. Additionally, you can access all of the rewards and discounts by downloading the Blue Light Card App.
