Reader’s Question – Can I get tax relief for cleaning my uniform?

Reader's Question:

Hi Damien,

Can I claim income tax relief for cleaning my uniform?

My Response:

A lot of people may read this question and think 'sorry? claim tax relief for washing clothes - you must be joking?!'

Well the answer  is 'yes you  can'.

The rules are that you can get tax relief on the cost of repairing, cleaning or replacing a uniform if

  • it's a recognisable uniform that shows you've got a certain sort of job - like a nurse or police uniform
  • your employer requires you to wear it while you're working
  • you've got to pay for it yourself

The tax relief also covers the cost of cleaning, repairing or replacing the uniform.

Follow this link for full details how to claim the income tax relief.

I hope that helps

Best Wishes

Damien
