What does Asda pet insurance cover?

Asda offers seven pet insurance policies across two different types of pet insurance; lifetime and time-limited. They offer a maximum amount of £10,000 of vet fee cover per year, depending on the policy you choose. We explain the different policy types in more detail below:

Lifetime pet insurance

Asda has five annual limit lifetime pet insurance policies to choose from, with veterinary fee cover ranging up to £10,000 a year, depending on the policy you choose. Its comprehensive lifetime policies are annual limit lifetime pet insurance that insure your pet for a set veterinary fee amount each policy year. This amount then renews annually and any conditions you have claimed for will be covered for the duration of your pet’s lifetime as long as you renew your policy each year.

For more information on lifetime pet insurance, read our article ‘Lifetime pet insurance explained’.

Time-limited pet insurance

You have the choice between two time-limited pet insurance policies with Asda Money with veterinary fee cover of £2,000 and £5,000 depending on the policy you choose. The policies will insure your pet for the set amount of veterinary fees for 12 months from when treatment starts. The condition will no longer be covered once the vet fee limit is reached or after 12 months from treatment starting but any new conditions can still be claimed for.

For more information on time-limited pet insurance, read our article ‘Time-limited pet insurance explained’.

The other types of pet insurance that are not provided by Asda Money are Maximum benefit and accident-only. You can learn more about the different types of pet insurance in our article, 'What are the different types of pet insurance?'

Inner limits of Asda pet insurance policies

There are inner limits to what you are able to claim for within your veterinary fee cover. These are specific caps applied to high-cost treatments, which limit the amount you can claim within the overall annual vet fee sum

For instance, although you might be covered for up to £10,000 per year, a complex operation like cruciate ligament treatment or a specialist diagnostic scan will only be covered up to a specific amount. These limits reset annually for the Lifetime policies, but are per condition for Time-Limited policies.

Here are the key inner limits across Asda's Time-Limited and Lifetime policies:

How much does Asda pet insurance cost?

How much you pay for your pet insurance premium varies depending on the type, age and breed of your pet. Where you live may also affect your premium due to the cost of veterinary treatment in your area.  For more information on what affects the cost of pet insurance read our article '7 factors that affect the cost of pet insurance'.

In the below comparison table, we have compared the cost of the different pet insurance policies with Asda Money.

The following quotes are based on a mixed breed 1-year-old cat and dog with no underlying health conditions and living in a South East postcode. The quotes are based on an excess of £150. The quotes could therefore be lower if a higher policy excess was chosen.

Asda pet insurance policy excess

Asda has a fixed policy excess on each of its pet insurance policies. Despite the policy documents stating you can choose an excess between £100 - £250, when we ran a quote we were only give the choice of £150, £200 or £250.

The following pet breeds will have a minimum excess of £200; Bullmastiff, Dogue De Bordeaux, French Bulldog, Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, Newfoundland, Pyrenean Mastiff, Rottweiler, St Bernard, Tibetan Mastiff, Chow Chow, Bulldog, English Bulldog, (Toy) Bulldog, Shar Pei, German Shepherd, Boxer, Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest Cat.

The excess on an Asda pet insurance policy is payable once per condition for time-limited policies and once per condition per policy year for the lifetime policies.

Asda pet insurance policies also have a compulsory co-payment which is payable for all pets over the age of 5. This is 10% of the remaining vet fee claim in addition to the policy excess. A co-payment is a percentage contribution to the cost of the vet fees. For example, if you claim for £1,000 vet bill, and your fixed excess is £200, you will need to pay 10% of the remaining £800 of the bill so an additional £80, and £280 in total towards the claim.

How to make a claim with Asda pet insurance

You can make a claim online on the Asda money website, you will need your policy number as well as your claims information to hand. Alternatively if your vet uses VETENVOY, they can claim directly online, they will need your policy number, name, postcode and your pet's name.

If you prefer to discuss your claim you can do so calling 0333 999 0933 but you will need to submit a completed claim form for it to be processed. You or your vet will be sent a link so you can do this. When making a claim you will need to ensure it has been submitted within 12 months from when treatment starts otherwise you will not be covered.

Asda pet insurance reviews

Asda Money has a score of 4.6 on review site Trustpilot so is rated "excellent". However these reviews are for all the services that Asda Money provides. Their pet insurance has a limited number of customer reviews and from the recent reviews that we did find on Trustpilot, customers complained of problems with price increases upon renewal and the length of time it takes for claims to be processed whilst others praised the claims process citing how easy it was and how quickly the claim was settled. As with all pet insurance policies, you should ensure you do your research to ensure you find the policy that is best for you.

Alternatives to Asda pet insurance

In this section of the review, we compare Asda pet insurance to Petgevity* and Tesco pet insurance providers. You may also wish to compare pet insurance providers with a comparison site such as MoneySuperMarket*. Comparison sites mean you can compare a range of providers to find the cheapest insurance for your pet. One thing to consider, however, is that comparison sites are not always whole of market, for example Petplan do not appear on comparison sites.

Petgevity

Petgevity* is a provider that specialises in lifetime cover, so although it doesn't have the choice of policies that Asda Money offers, it does have lifetime veterinary cover ranging from £2,000 to £15,000 per year. It also offers cover for pets with pre-existing conditions. Petgevity also have a wide range of excess options, including the choice to pay no excess. Unlike Asda Money there is no compulsory co-payment when your pet ages, but there is a voluntary co-payment so you can tailor your premium to suit your budget. Like Asda Money, Petgevity has a multi-pet discount and no upper age limit for taking out a new policy. You can find out more about Petgevity in our independent review.

Tesco pet insurance

As well as time-limited and lifetime insurance policies, Tesco pet insurance offers maximum-benefit insurance. The maximum cover you can buy is a lifetime policy with £10,000 veterinary cover per year. Like Asda Money the insurance policies will not cover pre-existing conditions but you can benefit from a multi-pet discount. Unfortunately Tesco do have an upper age limit for taking our new insurance policies and there is also a compulsory co-payment as your pet ages, for Tesco it is slightly older than Asda and comes into effect when your dog is 8 years old (some breeds 5 years old) and your cat 10 years old. You can also choose to pay a voluntary co-payment when your pet is younger. For more information read our independent review of Tesco Pet Insurance.

Asda pet insurance cons

  • 10% compulsory co-payment (in addition to policy excess) for pets over 5

  • Only covers pets from 8 weeks

Summary

Overall, Asda offers a good choice of pet insurance policies with a range of cover levels across Lifetime and Time-limited options amd a choice of excess levels to suit your needs.

Asda Pet Insurance offers several features that benefit pet owners; there is no upper age limit when taking out a new policy, you can pay your premiums monthly at no extra cost and if you have more than one pet you can qualify for a 10% multi-pet discount.

A major drawback of Asda's policy is the compulsory 10% co-payment (in addition to the fixed excess) that applies to all claims once your pet turns 5 years old. This age threshold is significantly lower than the UK industry standard, which typically introduces this co-payment when a dog reaches 8 and a cat reaches 10. Also claims for the death of a pet due to illness are only covered up until the pet's 7th birthday. The industry standard for this benefit is often set higher, particularly for cats.

Finally, while the overall Asda Money brand has an "Outstanding" rating on Trustpilot, specific customer reviews for the Pet Insurance product often complain of a slow claims process and significant premium increases at renewal. As with any type of insurance, it is always worth shopping around to ensure you are getting the best deal.
