What does Asda pet insurance cover?
Asda offers seven pet insurance policies across two different types of pet insurance; lifetime and time-limited. Below we explain the difference between the different types of pet insurance but to compare the Asda policies in more detail, take a look at our comparison table. For more information on the different types of pet insurance read our article, 'What are the different types of pet insurance?'
Lifetime pet insurance
Asda has five annual limit lifetime pet insurance policies to choose from, with veterinary fee cover ranging up to £10,000 a year, depending on the policy you choose. Its comprehensive lifetime policies are annual limit lifetime pet insurance that insure your pet for a set veterinary fee amount each policy year, and then renew when you renew your policy, even if you have previously made a claim.
For more information on lifetime pet insurance, read our article ‘Lifetime pet insurance explained’.
Time-limited pet insurance
You have the choice between two time-limited pet insurance policies with Asda Money and veterinary fee cover ranges between £2,000 and £5,000 depending on the policy you choose. A time-limited pet insurance policy will insure your pet for a set amount of veterinary fees but usually only for a set period of time from when the condition was first diagnosed; normally 12 months. If you reach the veterinary fee limit within the 12-month period then the condition is no longer covered and if you do not exceed the veterinary fee limit but it has been 12 months since the diagnosis, it will no longer be insured.
For more information on time-limited pet insurance, read our article ‘Time-limited pet insurance explained’.

Asda pet insurance policy excess
Asda has a fixed policy excess on each of its pet insurance policies. The excesses are fixed between £100 - £250 and customers can choose how much they wish to pay in £25 increments.
The following pet breeds will have a minimum excess of £200; Bullmastiff, Dogue De Bordeaux, French Bulldog, Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, Newfoundland, Pyrenean Mastiff, Rottweiler, St Bernard, Tibetan Mastiff, Chow Chow, Bulldog, English Bulldog, (Toy) Bulldog, Shar Pei, German Shepherd, Boxer, Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest Cat.
The excess on an Asda pet insurance policy is payable once per condition for time-limited policies and once per condition per policy year for the lifetime policies.
Asda pet insurance policies also have a compulsory co-payment which is payable for all pets over the age of 5. This is 10% of the remaining vet fee claim in addition to the policy excess. A co-payment is a percentage contribution to the cost of the vet fees.

Asda pet insurance reviews
Asda pet insurance has a limited number of customer reviews on review sites such as Trustpilot. From the recent reviews that we found on Trustpilot, customers complained of problems with the claims process and claims being settled. As with all pet insurance policies, you should ensure you do your research to ensure you find the policy that is best for you.
Alternatives to Asda pet insurance
In this section of the review, we compare Asda pet insurance to other pet insurance providers. You may also wish to compare pet insurance providers with a comparison site such as Quotezone*, MoneySuperMarket* or Compare the Market*. Comparison sites mean you can compare a range of providers to find the cheapest insurance for your pet. One thing to consider, however, is that comparison sites are not always whole of market so you may be missing out on a deal elsewhere.

Asda pet insurance pros
- 10% multi-pet discount
- Lifetime and time-limited policies
- Dental cover for both illness and injury on select lifetime policies
- Opportunity to pay your vet direct
Asda pet insurance cons
- 10% compulsory co-payment (in addition to policy excess) for pets over 5

Summary
Overall Asda offers a good choice of pet insurance policies with a range of cover levels to suit your needs. The price of its pet insurance premiums is competitive when compared to other similar pet insurance providers and the fact you can choose your policy excess may be appealing to some.
However, it is worth remembering that with all Asda pet insurance policies you will need to pay a compulsory 10% co-payment for pets over the age of 5. Additionally, there is a lack of incentives for opening a pet insurance policy with Asda when compared to Sainsbury's and Tesco, whose policies provide Nectar and Clubcard discounts for taking out a policy. However, if you open an Asda pet insurance policy before 31/12/23 you can benefit from £40 in your Asda Rewards Cashpot. As with any type of insurance, it is always worth shopping around to ensure you are getting the best deal.
