Asda pet insurance review

In this independent review, we look at Asda pet insurance including the different policies on offer, how much it costs and how it compares to other insurers. We recommend that you read the review in full, however, if you wish to jump to specific sections, you can do so using the following links.

What is Asda pet insurance?

You can insure your pet with Asda money, meaning that in the event of your pet getting ill or injured, you can claim back for the cost of your veterinary bills up to the agreed policy limit. Asda Money also offers other financial products including travel, home and car insurance as well as credit cards and loans. Asda pet insurance was voted the ‘Best Online Pet Insurance Provider' by YourMoney.com in 2019.

Asda Money has partnered with Legal & General to offer its pet insurance policies and the pet insurance is underwritten by Fairmead Insurance Limited. Whilst Legal & General offers pet insurance directly via its site it has temporarily paused pet insurance policies for new customers as it is 'working hard to support existing customers'. We do still compare Asda pet insurance to Legal & General pet insurance later on in the article to see if there is a difference between the providers.

Asda pet insurance features

  • Lifetime, time-limited and accident-only pet insurance policies
  • Up to £10,000 of veterinary fee cover (policy dependant)
  • 10% multi-pet discount
  • 24-hour vet advice line
  • Payments can be made directly to your vet
  • Dental cover for accidental injury

What does Asda pet insurance cover?

Asda offers six pet insurance policies across three different types of pet insurance; lifetime, time-limited and accident-only. Below we explain the difference between the different types of pet insurance but to compare the Asda policies in more detail, take a look at our comparison table. For more information on the different types of pet insurance read our article, 'What are the different types of pet insurance?'

Lifetime pet insurance

Asda has three annual limit lifetime pet insurance policies to choose from, with veterinary fee cover ranging up to £10,000 a year, depending on the policy you choose. Its most comprehensive lifetime policy is an annual limit lifetime pet insurance policy that insures your pet for a set veterinary fee amount each policy year, and then renews when you renew your policy, even if you have previously made a claim. The other two lifetime policies are annual limit per condition lifetime policies, offering cover of £4,000 per year and £2,000 per year. This means that each condition is insured up to the total vet fee amount each year, and then renews again the following policy year, should you choose to renew your policy.

For more information on lifetime pet insurance, read our article ‘Lifetime pet insurance explained’.

Time-limited pet insurance

You have the choice between two time-limited pet insurance policies with Asda Money and veterinary fee cover ranges between £2,000 and £5,000 depending on the policy you choose. A time-limited pet insurance policy will insure your pet for a set amount of veterinary fees but usually only for a set period of time from when the condition was first diagnosed; normally 12 months. If you reach the veterinary fee limit within the 12 month period then the condition is no longer covered and if you do not exceed the veterinary fee limit but it has been 12 months since the diagnosis, it will no longer be insured.

For more information on time-limited pet insurance, read our article ‘Time-limited pet insurance explained’.

Accident-only pet insurance

Asda offers one accident-only pet insurance policy for those who wish to insure their pet against treatment for accidents and not illnesses. This policy tends to be cheaper than other pet insurance policies but it does not insure your pet for treatment due to illness. Asda’s accident-only pet insurance policy will insure your pet for up to £2,500 per condition.

For more information on accident-only pet insurance, read our article ‘Accident-only pet insurance explained’.

Asda pet insurance policy excess

Asda has a fixed policy excess on each of its pet insurance policies and the more comprehensive your policy the lower the excess you will have to pay. The excesses are fixed at either £75 or £99, depending on the policy you choose. The excess on an Asda pet insurance policy is payable once per condition for time-limited and accident-only policies and once per condition per policy year for the lifetime policies.

If you have a lifetime pet insurance policy with Asda, you will have to pay a 10% co-payment on top of the policy excess for each claim, once your pet reaches 5 years old. A co-payment is a percentage contribution to the cost of the vet fees.

How to make a claim with Asda pet insurance

If you wish to make a claim on your Asda pet insurance policy you can do so by emailing [email protected] or calling 0370 405 0007. You can also download a claims form via the Legal & General website. When making a claim you will need to ensure it has been submitted within 90 days of the incident or within 90 days before your policy is up for renewal, whichever is sooner.

In order to receive your claim, you must continue to make regular payments for your policy and if it is up for renewal, you must renew your policy to receive payment for any claims you have made. If you do not continue to pay your policy premium, or you choose to cancel your premium after making a claim, you will not be paid the claim amount.

If you are making a loss and theft or death of a pet claim you will need to provide proof of purchase for your pet. If you are unable to do this you will be paid up to a maximum of £75 for a cat or £150 for a dog.

Asda pet insurance reviews

Asda pet insurance has a limited number of customer reviews on review sites such as Trustpilot. From the four that we found on Trustpilot, ranging from 2018 - 2021, customers complained of problems with the claims process and claims being settled. On its website, Asda pet insurance has a rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars from around 100 reviews.

Those who have rated Asda pet insurance as 'Good' comment on the easy quotation process and a reasonable cost for the levels of cover. Those who rated it as 'Bad' cited problems with customer service and submitting payments online. It is worth noting that most of the good reviews on the Asda website mention the application process and the cost of the premiums. The reviews rarely mention the customer service and claims process.

Alternatives to Asda pet insurance

In this section of the review, we compare Asda pet insurance to other pet insurance providers.

Asda vs Legal & General

Asda pet insurance policies are offered on behalf of Legal & General so the documentation and claims process is the same as if you had bought the policy direct with Legal & General. Currently, Legal & General are not offering pet insurance policies for new customers so if you wanted to get a pet insurance policy you would only be able to buy a policy via Asda Money. The pet insurance policies offered by both Asda and Legal & General are exactly the same in terms of levels of cover and benefits and once Legal & General begin offering pet insurance policies again we will update this section with a cost comparison table to see if you are better off buying a policy with Asda or direct with Legal & General.

Asda vs Sainsbury's vs Tesco pet insurance

In the below comparison table we have compared Asda's pet insurance policy to a pet insurance policy with Sainsbury's and Tesco. For the purpose of the table, we have compared the most comprehensive lifetime pet insurance policies with each of the providers. The quotes are based on a 1-year-old mixed breed cat and dog with no underlying health conditions and living in a South East postcode. The age, type and breed of your pet will affect the cost of your pet insurance policy so the following quotes are just a guide as to what you could expect to pay. Summary

Overall Asda offers a good choice of pet insurance policies with a range of cover levels to suit your needs. The price of its pet insurance premiums is competitive when compared to other similar pet insurance providers and the fact it has a lower policy excess for some policies may be appealing to some.

However, it is worth remembering that with all Asda lifetime pet insurance policies you will need to pay a compulsory 10% co-payment for pets over the age of 5. Additionally, there are a lack of incentives for opening a pet insurance policy with Asda when compared to Sainsbury's and Tesco, whose policies provide Nectar and Clubcard discounts for taking out a policy. As with any type of insurance, it is always worth shopping around to ensure you are getting the best deal.
