Money tip #200 – Only take cash shopping (and why)

1 min read Published: 19 Nov 2012

£20 notes Well I’ve made it to my 200th Money tip and there's plenty more to come. But to celebrate this milestone I ran a competition offering readers the chance to win a £20 Amazon voucher for the best suggestion for my 200th tip. I received lots of entries via email, facebook and twitter but there can only be one winner.

So congratulations to Linda Cartlidge! Her money tip was:

Cash is King! - Only take cash shopping - you have to stick to your budget - it's much easier to overspend with a debit or credit card as the payment is 'invisible'. It's also much easier to talk discounts if you are waving cash in your seller's face!

And here are two of the best entries received via Twitter.

Thanks again to all those entered and keep an eye out for more competitions in the future.

  1. This is an interesting tip and definitely can apply it to my own habits. My dad used to call me the Queen as I never carried cash but I always find myself over spending and using my debit card for really small spends which all added up.
I still use cards for the majority of my items but I am more likely to stick to budget if I have cash in my purse.
