What is Agria pet insurance?
Agria* originated in Sweden and first started offering pet healthcare in 1890. In 2009, after expanding across Europe, it came to the UK and now offers pet insurance for dogs, cats, rabbits and horses. Agria "understands that a pet is for life" and therefore only offers lifetime pet insurance policies. Lifetime pet insurance is the most comprehensive pet insurance policy type as it will cover your pet's illnesses for the duration of its life. However, lifetime pet insurance is not the only type available on the market and more information on the different types can be found in our article, 'What is pet insurance?'
According to its website, Agria believes "in a tailored approach to pet insurance" and because of this, it offers policies that can be adapted so that you only pay for what you need. Agria's claim handling team are veterinary trained nurses and are based in the UK. Agria's Lifetime, Lifetime Plus and Lifetime Premium products won Which? Best Buy pet insurance in December 2025. 90% of Agria customers renew their insurance according to data collected from October 2023 to October 2024.
Despite Agria originating in Sweden it is based and regulated in the UK, however, its insurance policies are underwritten by Agria Försäkring which is based and regulated in Sweden but they do have a UK office and are regulated by the Prudential Regulatory Authority and FCA.

Agria pet insurance policy excess
Agria has the option of two policy excesses for its cat and dog policies. The higher excess option is £170 and the lower excess option is £95 for cats and £105 for dogs. As well as the fixed excess, you can choose to pay a 10% or 20% variable excess. The variable excess is similar to a co-payment where you are charged your chosen percentage of the remaining vet bill once the fixed excess has been deducted. If you then go on to make additional claims for the same condition in the same policy year, Agria only charges the variable excess for these further claims. So you are only paying the fixed excess once per condition per policy year.
Agria Rabbit policies have a fixed excess of £75 and the option to pay a variable excess of 0% or 10% If you choose to pay a 10% variable excess then as per the cat and dog insurance policies you will pay the fixed excess and the variable excess for your first claim for a condition and then just the variable excess for further claims for that condition in that policy year.
As your pet ages, a mandatory variable excess of 20% is applied for older pets "to help minimise age-related premium inflation". The age from which this is applied varies depending on the type and breed of your pet.
How to make a claim with Agria insurance
Agria says the easiest way to submit your claim is via your vet. They can use the Vet Envoy or Teleos portals to do this. If your vet doesn't use Vet Envoy or you'd prefer to submit the claim yourself you can fill out an online claim form. In order to make a claim, you will need your policy number, your pet's clinical history from your vet as well as information about the claim including dates of treatment and receipts.
If you have any questions about your claim you can call 03330 308399 or email [email protected].
Claims must be submitted within the end date of the period of insurance or within 6 months of the first date of treatment, whichever is the latter.
Agria pet insurance customer reviews
Agria* pet insurance has a rating of "Excellent" on Trustpilot with a score of 4.8 out of 5.0 stars from over 11,600 reviews. 85% of customers rated it as 5 stars citing polite, helpful and understanding customer service, an easy to use claims process and no problems with claims being paid. 4% rated it as "Bad" and saying they were unhappy with outcome of their claim and high premium increases upon renewal.
Alternatives to Agria pet insurance
In this section of the review, we compare Agria pet insurance to two of its competitors ManyPets and Petplan.
You can also compare pet insurance via a comparison site such as MoneySuperMarket*. Comparison sites allow you to easily compare a multitude of pet insurance providers to find a policy that suits your pet. One thing to consider is that not all comparison sites are whole of market so you may be able to get a better deal elsewhere with a provider that does not feature on comparison sites such as Petplan. Our article, 'Best pet insurance in the UK in 2026' compares some of the best pet insurance providers.
ManyPets
Like Agria*, ManyPets only offers lifetime insurance but it differs in that it has a specific policy for pets with pre-existing conditions. The standard lifetime cover ranges from £3,000 to £20,000 per year. With ManyPets you have a choice of excess and can also choose to pay a 10% or 20% co-payment to help bring the cost of your insurance premium down. Like Agria, ManyPets doesn't have an upper age limit when taking out a new policy but there is a compulsory co-payment when your pet ages. ManyPets offers a discount if you are insuring more than one pet and it is a generous 15% and if you are switching to ManyPets from another insurer you will receive continuous cover for your pet (terms apply). For more information read our ManyPets insurance review.
Petplan
Petplan has a choice of lifetime and time-limited pet insurance. There is an upper age limit if you are looking to take out a lifetime insurance policy but not with the time-limited cover. The maximum veterinary cover with Petplan is not as high as Agria with the maximum amount being £12,000 per year. Petplan have a fixed excess and no voluntary co-payment but there is a compulsory co-payment as your pet ages. Like Agria it is one of the more expensive insurance providers but it's website claims they pay out on 97% of claims submitted. Read more about Petplan in our Petplan insurance review.

Agria pet insurance pros and cons
Agria pet insurance pros
- Offers lifetime pet insurance policies which is the most comprehensive cover for your pet
- Pays 98% of claims
- Free 24/7 vet helpline
- No additional cost for paying monthly
Agria pet insurance cons
- Compulsory 20% variable excess for older pets

Summary
Agria* says it pays out 98% of its pet insurance claims and its standout feature is the ability to offer insurance cover for those who breed from their pet. Most insurers do not offer cover for breeding due to complications caused by pregnancy or birth. Agria also offer insurance for XL Bully dogs (terms apply).
It has a good range of vet fee cover and flexibility with optional extras so you are only paying for what you need. The policies do tend to be one of the most expensive on the UK market, particularly when it comes to dogs. However there are some great reviews on Trustpilot from customers who have claimed and Agria state that 90% of its customers renew their insurance which would indicate policy holders are happy.
As with all pet insurance policies it is advisable to shop around to ensure you are getting the best cover for your pet. Our article, 'Best pet insurance in the UK in 2026' compares some of the best pet insurance providers in the UK.
